GUEST VIEW: State fails to fund programs while creating new ones
By DAN KAPANKE
Three months ago, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Wisconsin’s state government healthcare programs such as Badgercare Plus would be facing a potential $1 billion in cuts over the next 18 months.
Recently, the state Senate passed the BadgerCare Plus Basic Plan claiming to provide an insurance program to an additional 25,000 Wisconsin residents. This bill creates a government-run, mandate-free health plan that does not even meet the minimum standards established by the state office of the commissioner of insurance for private sector insurance companies.
Which leads me to ask the question — should our state government expand a program when we repeatedly fail to fulfill its current obligations to existing healthcare programs?
